This Somerset and Dorset tank locomotive kit is etched on 0.018" brass for the body and 0.028" brass for the chassis. The coupling rods are etched on 0.018" nickel silver and are laminated on assembly for strength. The kit is designed to be soldered together using 180/145 solder, but some of the fittings could be fitted with glue or a bonding agent of your choice or low melt solder. Some of the parts have to be folded and the roof has to be formed, but this should cause no problems. The chassis has ample spacers for strength and has large bearings for the axles to run in. A motor like the small M.S.C., Mashima or Portescap RG7 can be fitted driving on the first or second axle. The chassis has etched brake arms, shoes and brake rods, the brake arms being of the double arm type, etched springs are also supplied. This chassis is not provided with compensation but we do supply cast white metal sandboxes and a brake cylinder along with wire, tube screws and nuts to assemble the brake gear and fit the chassis to the body. |

The body of this locomotive has a brass tube for the boiler, but the smoke box and saddle are cast in white metal, these parts can be glued if required. As can be seen on the photo the boiler fittings are of the rebuilt type, but original type fittings are also included in the kit, note that all cast fittings are in white metal, however the whistle is in brass. All boiler bands and etched beading are supplied, along with sprung buffers, wire, tube, screws, nuts, hand rail knobs and hand rail wire. The locomotive can be built as an open cab type, but no cab detail is supplied apart from a cast brake standard, regulator, and handle. However, a one piece cast backhead is available on request. The cab has an etched floor along with an etched backhead end plate. The coal rails on these locomotives varied, so we have supplied two types in this kit. A good set of assembly instructions are also supplied compiled in the form of an A4 booklet, all in a box large enough for the completed locomotive to be stored in. |
